Recap of Data Privacy Day 2025 – Data Privacy Day & HIPAA: A Partnership for the Protection of Health Information

Data Privacy Day occurs annually on January 28th, reminding us at the start of the new year to ensure we use data as intended. This day plays a crucial role in raising awareness, promoting best practices, and helping people understand their privacy rights.

This year, on Data Privacy Day, we focused our awareness efforts on understanding the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) principles and best practices for data protection. The day’s activities included informational HIPAA training for faculty, staff, and student employees and two tabling events. University Compliance and Ethics hosted a table on the main campus at the Student Union, and we were thrilled to collaborate with the School of Global Health Management and Informatics to host a tabling event at the downtown campus.

The informational training provided an overview of HIPAA, detailing the principles of protecting patient health information. It covered key provisions of HIPAA, including the Privacy Rule, which safeguards the confidentiality of health data, and the Security Rule, which sets standards for securing electronic protected health information (ePHI). The training also highlighted patients’ rights, such as the right to access and control their medical records and emphasized the importance of compliance to avoid breaches and penalties. Employees can access the HIPAA informational training in Workday at HIPAA training.

During the tabling events, we shared best practices for data protection, answered questions, provided informational handouts, distributed giveaways, and offered an infographic on Data Privacy accessible via the QR code below. We covered topics such as the top five data privacy tips, the importance of protecting personal and sensitive information, and what you should know about your rights, including your access to and control over your data. We also highlighted steps you can take to protect your data in daily interactions and digital environments.

We appreciate everyone who joined us to celebrate this important day. If you have any questions about the collection, handling, or storing of data, please email privacy@ucf.edu. Let’s continue working together to uphold data privacy standards and ensure compliance obligations.
